Plants of Forest

Three thousand mm of rain falls every year on Amami Oshima, where the nature of the forest, rivers, mangroves and sea all remain abundant. The eyes of the world are glued to the island for its impressive array of precious endemic species. Amami Oshima is home to plants that inhabited this land when the island was still connected to the continent. Scholars believe that original evolution took place as landmasses broke off and stood as isolated islands. One hundred twenty-four species of endemic plants have been reported.
